Wedding Gift Registry

July 23rd, 2011

There are many options for selecting a wedding gift registry. You have department stores, boutique, online, and travel gift registries. Also, it is no longer considered impolite to ask for money as gifts, especially when the couple may already have most of the traditional house hold gifts.

Firstly, decide what is important to you as a couple. If you already have a home established, then you may consider, a honeymoon fund. If not, then make  a list of all items required for your new home and life together. This is a fun and exciting process!!

If you are a lucky couple who have everything, request your guests to donate to a charitable fund.

For wedding gift registry, some considerations that you may wish to include are:

  • Consider items across a range of values for your guests.
  • Provide delivery and gift wrapping options, especially for bulky items.
  • Provide gift card options (great if you are running out of gift ideas) and money envelopes.
  • Create a registry with department stores
  • Create an online wedding gift registry which gives you the flexibility to chose items from many stores.

Your guests should not feel obliged to go with the wedding gift registry.

Some wedding gift registries include:

My Wedding

June 13th, 2011

The inspiration for this blog started with my indian wedding plan. I got married in January 2010 at Cardinia Cultural Centre, Pakenham.

Engagement: New Year’s Eve lunch at BhoJ Indian Restaurant, Docklands with family. Organised in a few days so was a success, great location. I personally found the food a bit sweeter than the spicy indian but the location made up for it.

Wedding: 3 January at Cardinia Cultural Centre, Pakenham. 10am wedding ceremony followed by lunch.
I was very happy with this location and service. Highly recommend it. They were very helpful, professional and accommodating given that it was their first indian wedding. The;r chefs cooked indian vegetarian food to our liking. We had the whole venue for our use and the guests enjoyed the canapes outside overlooking the lake. The kids loved the space as well.

Outfits: These were bought in India. I wore a traditional red saree and then changed into another saree for the reception. Husband wore a traditional kurta for wedding ceremony and suit for reception.

Mandap: I did not want to spend $3500 to $4000 on an indian mandap for an hour and half wedding ceremony. So, we opted for a modern indian look with decorated canopy on a stage. We saved money and were happy with it!  By Balwyn Events.

Decoration: Table flower arrangements, mandap, red carpet and chair bows. Used Balwyn Events, much cheaper than others.

Photographer: Chose an e-package where we professionally developed the photos, worked out much cheaper. Recommend Hilton Stone, this was his first indian wedding and he did a fantastic job!

Music: Our own collections.

Cake: By The Cake Place. Robyn was fantastic in catering for a vegetarian and mud cake option. The first layer was a light vegetarian fruit cake, followed by orange and lime mud cake…YUM. Loved the decoration and the cakes! Recommend The Cake Place anytime.

Car: Husband’s new car!

Shivani and Kunal’s Wedding

June 7th, 2011

Engagement Details
We really did not have an engagement ceremony. However, it was only a ritual that was done at home with close relatives.

Wedding/Reception Details
Our wedding was at the beautiful Concord Hall. We had around 300 guests and it was a memorable function with all my relatives and friends with me on my special day.

Wedding Outfits
My partner and I are Indians. I got my ‘lehengha’ (bride’s dress) desined & tailor-made from India. It was all handworked in golden and silver thread, beaded and double dyed in orange-red shades. My partner wore an off-white achkan, again handworked and designed in India.

Recommended Wedding Resources/Suppliers:
Wedding arrangements could be challenging at times. However, if you meet the right people, it could surely be the most memorable moment.

The best part of weddings is to capture them in the most ‘UNFORGETTABLE MOMENTS’ forever. We were lucky to have a great photographer who actually made this possible for us. I highly recommend him for all wedding shoots. His work can be viewed at www.IndianWeddingPhotography.com.au and you will agree his style of photography is distinct from any other photographer.

Royal Wedding – William and Kate

May 4th, 2011

Now you say there is nothing indian about this royal wedding. Yes but you can take inspiration from it.

Kate’s wedding dress was regal and nice, appropriate for a future queen. Why not consider traditional indian wedding sarees for your wedding? There are so many options with beautiful silks and brocades that cover the body instead of the bollywood flesh showing outfits.

Her bouquet was simple but elegant. Perhaps, you might consider a less garish garlands.

Her veil was weightless and showed her beautiful face and hair. Why not have a similar red veil for your indian wedding. Hairdressers complain that heavy veils are harder to keep on the head and not to mention the discomfort from having to carry it for at least 4 hours in an indian wedding. I say be stylish and comfortable.

Kate looked like Kate! Her make-up was elegant. Her eyes were more made-up than her lips and cheek. Perhaps consider that. Make yourself recognisable to your groom rather than cover yourself in heavy make-up. Chose either the eyes or lips to focus on.

Jewellery – kept to a minimum and heirloom pieces. This allowed her wedding dress to be admired. Why don’t you chose traditional gold jewellery or look alikes instead of matching chunky bollywood jewellery, the same as the indian wedding outfits.

See the photos…for more inspiration.

If you have more links showing Kate’s outfits better, please do share on this blog.

Wedding Budget

May 3rd, 2011

What is included and who pays?

Wedding budget needs to be discussed upfront when planning a wedding. This will make choices easier and help keep financials tight.

Indian weddings can be expensive but does not have to be. There are many ways to reduce costs, example:

  • chose an off season time and location a bit further out. Most guests are prepared to travel.
  • Find a cake-maker who does it as a hobby. My three tier cake cost only $340 and fed 120 people.
  • Do not have wedding favours. Most people are happy to just attend your wedding.
  • Negotiate catering prices for children as these are lower than adults.
  • Choose a venue that charges only for catering not hall hire, rare but they are out there.
  • Print your own professional wedding photos.
  • You don’t need a hire limousine but ask your friends to borrow their nice car for weddings.
  • Garlands, make your own as they are not that hard.
  • Compile your own music CD.
  • Purchase indian wedding outfits in India. It is much cheaper and you get a holiday as well.

With all the money saved, you can enjoy your Honeymoon!

Photographers

Wedding photos provide memories for a lifetime. Choosing a photographer that suits your requirements and budget is very important. In my personal experience, the one thing that couples do not think about is the “time” factor required in achieving those precious photos. Again, this depends on your style.  Some tips that I have gathered over time are:

  1. What is your budget? Don’t think you need to spend a fortune for your photographs. Do your research and be surprised at what’s out there.
  2. What is the duration of your event? Most photographers have packages starting from 5 to 7 hours or charge by the hourly rate.
  3. Do you prefer digital or film photography?
  4. How many events do you want photographed?  Such as Sangeet night, wedding and reception.
  5. Traditional vs Contemporary settings.
  6. Style of photography, journalistic or formal.
  7. Interview and view the photographers work.
  8. Do you want the photographer to be there while you are getting dressed?
  9. Do you want an album or digital photos on a disk?
  10. Colour vs Black/White photos?
  11. and many more….

Interviewing the photographer is very important. One photographer came without any decent work as examples and only mini proofs. While he was the cheapest, I chose to pay a bit more to someone who can provide my with examples of his work which I will eventually get. This is my personal experience. Do you have any similar experiences to share?
